Finn

Finn’s first awareness was the stabbing pain in her head. Next came the unusual warmth surrounding her, until she finally realized she was in a bed, near a fire. As her mind stumbled toward full consciousness, she heard the hushed voices of several women.

Lifting a trembling hand to her aching head, she sat up. Three young women were standing at the foot of the bed, watching her. Their eyes had all gone wide as she sat up.

"Where am I?" she asked.

The youngest of the three girls jumped as if startled. Her pale skin turned almost as pink as her strawberry colored hair, nearly hiding the orange smattering of freckles across her nose.

The oldest of the three, much more composed, smoothed her white apron as she stepped forward. "Our brother brought you here. Mother tended your injuries. She believes you will recover fully.”

"Brother?" Finn asked, then noticed just how much the oldest girl looked like Kai. She suddenly realized where she must be.

Before the oldest girl could speak further, the door to the small home opened, revealing the darkness outside. From out of the darkness stepped Kai and Anna, and an older woman who Finn surmised must be Kai’s mother.

"Told you she'd be fine," Anna said to Kai upon noticing her.

Kai's mother hurried past the pair toward the bed with a bushel of herbs in her arm. Her eyes were a pure crisp green, like spring leaves, seeming even crisper framed by her graying hair. She placed a plump hand on Finn's forehead, then peered studiously into each of her eyes before turning back to Kai. "She'll need to watch for dizziness. It may be a while before she's fully recovered. Rest will speed her healing.”

Finn didn't appreciate being spoken about like she wasn't there, but given the one doing the speaking, she bit her tongue.

Kai and Anna both approached the foot of the bed. The three girls had busied themselves with different small tasks. Clearly they were supposed to have let Finn be.

"What happened to you?" Kai asked, worry creasing his brow. "Loinnir led us to you and Naoki, but the last we saw you were attacked by that black dragon. We thought—”

Kai's mother looked sharply at him, as the three sisters turned toward him with a gasp. "Dragon?" the oldest asked as they rushed over.

"Now you've done it," his mother chided. "I told you not to mention it in front of them. Now they'll all be up with nightmares."

Kai winced. "My apologies, mother. It's been a long, and truly odd day."

Finn suspected Kai had not filled his mother in on certain things, namely on why he’d left so long ago, as she seemed rather cold toward him.

His mother turned back to Finn. "My name is Amara. Is it as they say? You were attacked by a dragon?"

Finn wondered if Kai had mentioned that she'd been riding another dragon at the time. She figured it best she keep that part to herself, and later ask him how Naoki seemed last they saw her.
